Our Background
Our Journey in the Capital: A Sacred Story of Devotion and Community
The land where ISKCON of DC now stands holds a rich and layered past. In the early 1900s, it became home to a small African American community formed by families who had once been enslaved but later came to own and cultivate the land themselves. They built homes, farmed, and lived along what is now known as Oaklyn Drive. The Cooper House, still standing today, is the last remaining structure from that community and a quiet testament to their resilience and presence.

Years later, this same land became home to ISKCON of DC, a spiritual community rooted in the practice of bhakti yoga and the teachings of His Divine Grace A C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. What was once a place of hard-earned freedom has become a sacred space for devotion, community, and spiritual growth.
