Growing As Devotees

“A devotee should always be thoughtful, peaceful, friendly, compassionate and self-realized.” Srimad Bhagavatam 3.27.8 Purport AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

What does it mean to be a devotee? We hear the word so often. While there are many meanings, the quote above gives a nice description of the qualities of a devotee in action. During Sunday Serve, we have the opportunity to practice advancing in the qualities of devotion. While by no means perfect, we continue to progress along the path of service to each other.

Simple gestures such as greeting one another along the prasadam line, for example, allow us an opportunity to practice being thoughtful and friendly. Other times, we may ask for or give help in order to do our service, and in this way we are practicing compassion for ourselves and others. While self-realization may seem a long way off sometimes, just a glimpse may come during our service when we are inspired and feel uplifted. Each time we serve, a special part of our devotional qualities has an opportunity to grow.

A special thank you to all the devotees who share their journey with Sunday Serve!
