When Life Feels Like Tough Love

Life often feels like moving through a crowded airport where every gate promises a different destination, yet none offer lasting rest. We rush with expectations, miss connections, face delays, and sometimes lose control over the journey we thought we were managing. In these moments, suffering appears like an unexpected announcement that interrupts our carefully planned itinerary.

Sometimes life also feels like tough love from a wise parent or a loving mentor who sees the destination long before we can see the path. It may redirect our path, block certain doors, or remove comforts we were holding onto. Though it feels unsettling in the moment, it is meant to protect us from deeper confusion and guide us toward what truly supports our growth.

At first, we respond like a dancer in a competition who has missed a step and tries even harder to control every movement. But life is not a performance judged by perfection. It is more like learning to trust the rhythm rather than fight it. Suffering gently breaks the illusion that we are the sole controllers of our story.

Surrender is not defeat. It is like a traveler finally relaxing into the care of a skilled pilot after realizing the flight was never in their hands. The heart begins to soften and shift from resistance to trust, from control to connection.

In bhakti tradition, this turning point is the beginning of real awakening. What once felt like tough love is gradually understood as mercy in disguise, guiding the heart from resistance toward remembrance, and from confusion toward deeper love and inner freedom.
