When Seasons bring Hope

Yesterday evening, I paused during my walk as a cool breeze carried a shower of colorful leaves across the sidewalk. A child getting down from the school bus ran ahead, laughing as the leaves swirled around her, while nearby someone quietly arranged pumpkins on their porch. The warmth of sunlight in the afternoon, the changing colors of the trees, and the signs of harvest all created a feeling that the neighborhood was preparing for something hopeful.

Fall season has a way of doing that. The trees quietly release what they no longer need, covering the earth with beautiful colors while making room for seasons yet to come. The air grows cooler, evenings arrive earlier, and small lights begin to glow against the gathering darkness. Even as the days grow shorter, hope seems to shine a little brighter.

Life also moves through seasons. There are times when our life carries the freshness of spring, the fullness of summer, the gentle transition of fall, or the quiet stillness of winter. Each season carries its own gifts. Some invite us to gather the fruits of patient effort. Others ask us to plant unseen seeds whose blossoms may appear only after life's hardest frosts have passed.

In the bhakti tradition, this season reminds us that the light of devotion can shine even during times of change. The Bhagavad Gita shares the comforting wisdom that when hearts turn toward the Divine with sincerity and love, the Divine carries what is needed and protects what is precious. Like a single lamp brightening a room, even a small offering of love can quietly illuminate the heart and those around us.

Perhaps fall is not only a season on the calendar. It may also be a season of the soul, a time to gather gratitude, nurture hope, and prepare gently for a brighter dawn.
